According to Durham's local news reporter Derrick Q. Lewis, the statue has been outside the old Durham County Courthouse since 1924. Engraved on the statue are the words “The Confederate States of America,” according to local CBS affiliate WNCN. Above the words "is a statue representing a soldier who fought in the civil war."
