Earlier this summer, the Hollywood Theatre presented Spielberg on Film—an excellent lineup of some of Steven Spielberg's best movies, all presented on 35 or 16mm. The next director who'll be part of the theater's "Celluloid Spotlight" series? None other than Stanley Kubrick.
The Hollywood's just-announced Kubrick on Film series will feature 2001: A Space Odyssey on 70mm (and if you haven't already seen 2001 on 70, don't miss this chance—it's nothing short of phenomenal), along with The Killing, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and A Clockwork Orange on 35mm. Unlike the Spielberg series, which spanned a few weeks, Kubrick on Film will only last four days, from Friday September 8 to Monday September 11.
Granted, I'm a ridiculously huge Kubrick fan, and distressingly greedy to boot, which means I wouldn't argue with seeing all his movies screened on film. (No Full Metal Jacket or Dr. Strangelove? How great would it be to see Paths of Glory or Lolita or Eyes Wide Shut in here, or to bridge this series and the Spielberg one with A.I. Artificial Intelligence?) But my obnoxious, ungrateful quibbling aside, there's no way around the fact this is a super strong lineup. I can't wait. Block off that weekend in September—and I'd advise getting tickets early. All are on sale now except for 2001, which is a Hollywood Theatre members-only presale until Monday.
